Costly election for the Congress in UP, literally | Rasheed Kidwai | Indiainteracts.com: "About 50 Congress candidates who were placed in "category A" by the party high command and given best "resources" have secured less than 5000 votes. In other words, they have forfeited deposit. If partymen are to be believed, each vote in these constituencies has cost the Congress over Rs 1000. There were three other informal categories --- "B," "C" and "D" --- which were given funds in accordance with their winning prospects. Congress sources said category "D" nominees were given Rs 10 lakh each as per prescribed limit by the Election Commission.

The results have shown a different picture. As per definition of category "D," around 280 party nominees have lost deposit against the party's pre-poll projection of 50. Most candidates who were in category "A" ended in "B" or "C" while "B" and "C" slumped to a crowded "D." The outcome of 2007 UP assembly polls resulted in Congress netting 22 seats, coming second in another 23."
