Major P Shyam Sundar cremated with military honours

Major P Shyam Sundar cremated with military honours .:. NewKerala - India's Top Online Newspaper: "Major P Shyam Sundar, who got killed while battling with the militants in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir this Sunday, was cremated with full military honours in Chennai this morning. He is survived by his wife Deepa and a three-year-old daughter.

Major Sunder had a heroic death as his contingent came under attack by the militants, who were hiding in a jungle nearby in Bhimbar Gali in Poonch district. Ensuing a gun battle with the militants, one of the soldiers, Sepoy Rama Rao, of the group led by Major Shyam Sunder got hit by a militant shot. While trying to reprieve the wounded soldier, Major Sundar got himself fatally injured by gunshot.

However, the Army killed one LTTE (Liberation of Tamil Tiger Eelam). One rifle, AK-56, five magazines, three grenades and 130 rounds of ammunition were recovered from him.

Major Shyam Sunder was serving with the Rashtriya Rifles Battalion. He was on his second tenure in the counter insurgency environment. The first being in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir a few years ago with his parent battalion of the Madras Regiment. Before this posting in Poonch, Major Shyam Sunder was deputed as an instructor at the NCC Academy at Kamptee, near Nagpur. "
