The Statesman: "Emily Lau in her article Speak Chinese writes: With the best of will in the world the government (of Hongkong) cannot ... do very much about the many teachers who simply cannot teach pure English. If this be the case with a closely held British colony, the magnitude of the problem our state has to face where there is an acute dearth of well-qualified English teachers at present may be well imagined.
It augurs well for the education system in West Bengal that at last decades of animus against English has been driven away. After a lot of controversy, it is gratifying to find that reason has finally dawned. But could anybody dispute the fact that the steadily declining standard of English among students is because of the method of teaching English which has been faulty notwithstanding the many experiments carried out?
