Kerry and Edwards on the issues

"ABORTION: Both support abortion rights and have indicated they would only nominate Supreme Court justices who share that view.
DEATH PENALTY: Kerry opposes except for terrorists; Edwards supports.
DEFICIT: Kerry says he wants to cut the deficit by half in first term; Edwards said the deficit should be reduced each year.
EDUCATION: Both oppose private school vouchers, say more money must be put into schools and federal standards are too rigid. Both proposed substantial tuition assistance for public-university students who perform community service. Edwards backed a plan for public-school choice that Kerry opposed.
FARMING: Edwards has supported sugar-subsidy programs that Kerry opposed. Kerry backed a tobacco-tax increase that Edwards opposed.
ENVIRONMENT: Both oppose drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; neither explicitly endorses Kyoto treaty on global warming.
HEALTH CARE: Both proposed major expansion of coverage, Edwards' cheaper plan aimed at covering all children, Kerry's plan aimed to bring nation closer to universal coverage. Edwards questioned whether Kerry's plan was affordable.
IRAQ: Both have said NATO should provide more of the security in Iraq and more allies need to be brought in. Both voted for the war and against the $87 billion package last fall for continued military action and reconstruction for Iraq and Afghanistan, which passed.
JOBS: Both proposed domestic manufacturing and high-tech incentives, and would eliminate tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas.
SOCIAL SECURITY: Both oppose partial privatization of Social Security. Edwards laid out a plan to match $1 in private retirement savings with up to $1 in a refundable tax credit, with a limit of $1,000 per couple, for people of low to moderate income.

SPACE: Both favor proposed manned mission to Mars, if the federal budget allows.

TAXES: Both support raising taxes on the wealthy to pre-Bush levels, Kerry doing so for people making over $200,000, Edwards aiming for those making over $240,000.

TRADE: Edwards has opposed several trade deals supported by Kerry, including the North American Free Trade Agreement, but did not propose revoking NAFTA. Both say new agreements should have stronger labor and environmental protections. "
