Newsreels make a comeback in AP theatres

NDTV.com: "The next time you go to watch a movie at a cinema theatre anywhere in Andhra Pradesh, you will have to necessarily sit through this 10-minute newsreel. The new Congress government has decided to make screening of newsreels compulsory after it found that most exhibitors give it the skip.

Earlier, a films division newsreel was like the starter to the main course feature film and movie experience was incomplete without it. But theatre owners are not amused because not only they need to show the newsreel, they also have to pay for it. One per cent of gross collections on each show goes into the government's pocket. The only concession the government is willing to make is to reduce the length of each capsule from 10 to 7 minutes so that exhibitors can have some more time to screen ads and generate revenue."
