Birth day celebrations have become a fashion. More so for the politicians who seem to buttress their bloated ego a little more paradoxically in face of sagging self image of increasingly impoverishing millions of Indians.
Though the ruling Congress party’s president Mrs. Sonia Gandhi maintained that her celebration would be a low key affair the message did not seem to get across to various ministries of the government headed by the party that Mrs. Gandhi is the Chief. How else does one explain large insertions of advertisements in the leading national dailies by the various ministries of the government of India and state governments where the ruling party Congress party is in the power. A few crores have gone from the coffers of the nation. But who cares!
None would object if this expenditure is incurred by the individual loyal minions or for that matter the party she presides over. But it is done at the expense of public money is a shame and insult to the people of this country who pay tax not to be spent on public worshipping of some individuals but to improve the quality of life of their fellow citizens.
It must be noted that the same Congress party had vociferously and rightly protested against the India shining campaign of the erstwhile NDA government that aimed at vulgar display of publicity blitz disguisedly advancing the cause of then political party in power.
PUCL strongly condemns this useless spending of the taxpayer’s money for the individual eulogizing which serves no public interest. It hopes that more and more people would rise against such bereft of common-sense-less acts and would write personal letters to all concerned politicians so that they desist from such actions in future.
