CNN.com - Apr. 11, 2003: "Mayor Michael Bloomberg has filed lawsuits against four nations for allegedly failing to pay real estate taxes on Manhattan properties. Turkey, the Philippines, India and Mongolia allegedly owe the city more than $100 million for taxes, charges and interest accrued since the 1970s. Turkey and the Philippines allegedly used their property commercially and India and Mongolia housed employees in the mission other than the head of the mission.
Twenty to 30 other countries have been investigated for back taxes. However, they either paid their fees, filed applications for exemptions, or are currently involved in negotiations. According to the lawsuit, Turkey owes $70 million; the Philippines, $17 million; India, $16 million; and Mongolia, $2 million. "
