Job Cuts at Hewlett-Packard

The New York Times > Technology :: Bloomberg News: "The Hewlett-Packard Company, the world's largest printer maker, said yesterday that more than 1,900 workers at its printing and imaging unit had accepted severance packages. Employees in the United States and Puerto Rico were offered and accepted voluntary severance packages last month, said Monica Sarkar, a spokeswoman for the company, based in Palo Alto, Calif.

Most cuts will be at the company's offices in Boise, Idaho, and Corvallis, Ore., she said. Profit in the printing group, which accounts for more than two-thirds of Hewlett-Packard earnings, fell 3.6 percent last quarter as the company cut prices deeply.

The cuts are "part of the transformation of I.P.G. to maintain market leadership and improve the cost structure," Ms. Sarkar said. She declined to say how many workers remained in the unit. "
