India theft suspect dies of burns

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Monica Chadha : "Police in India's Maharashtra state are investigating the burning to death of a suspect inside a police station.
Officers say the man set himself on fire on Tuesday after being brought in for questioning in connection with a number of thefts.

Police say the man had a criminal record and they had ample evidence to call him for questioning. The death is being investigated by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and railway police.

Railway police will submit a report to the country's National Human Rights Commission. Officials say the man was kept in a police barrack on a railway station in Thane district, a Mumbai (Bombay) suburb, and a policeman was there to guard him.

The suspect set fire to a heap of waste paper kept in the adjacent room and sustained severe burn injuries, police say. He was taken to hospital but succumbed to his injuries. "
