Report on Karnataka 'misinterpreted': WB

NDTV: "The Country Director of the World Bank has said that figures on Karnataka in the Bank's 'India Investment Climate Assessment 2004' have been misrepresented.

The 'report provides no basis for claiming that Karnataka was the most corrupt state in India in 2004', the director added.

In one survey in the report it was found that when perception of corruption as a bottleneck to investment was considered, then Karnataka was ranked the highest in this factor among all the other states surveyed.

Extracts of the report had been given to the press by, among others, former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

He said that he was publicising the report to make it clear that the study was conducted during SM Krishna's time as chief minister and not after the current coalition government took over. "
