Gates gets a taste of TN

G.C. Shekhar : HindustanTimes.com: "Minutes before, Maran had led Gates to the residence of DMK chief and former chief minister M. Karunanidhi, who went on to extol his government’s achievements in the IT sector. Parley over, Gates stepped out of Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence only to be put off by pesky reporters.

Not one to be media-shy, Maran went on to crib that he could not take Gates to TIDEL Park, Chennai’s IT hub, because of the potholed roads leading to the software enclave. Aghast mediapersons listened in shock as the minister tore apart the image of a city still recovering from the fury of the recent floods.

Tamil Nadu, he said, should learn from the Bangalore experience and improve its infrastructure if it were to attract investment in the IT sector.

Gates, however, will get exactly the opposite view on Friday morning when he meets chief minister Jayalalithaa, who on Thursday inked a deal with BMW for setting up its assembly plant near Chennai.

If the Microsoft chairman wonders if the chief minister and the IT minister are talking of the same city, this should throw some light: Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa are to Tamil Nadu what he and Linus Trovalds (creator of Linux) are to the IT world."
