Chennai Online News Service - View News: "Issuing a strong warning to Tamil Tigers against returning to war, the US today said the rebels would have to face a formidable Sri Lankan military that was trained by the Americans.
The US wanted the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to stop "violent activities" and return to peace talks and perish the thought of going back to fighting, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Jeffrey Lunstead, told a meeting of businessmen here.
An upsurge in violence in the past month which claimed over 115 lives has raised fears for a truce arranged and put in place by peace broker Norway since February 2002.
"If the LTTE chooses to abandon peace, however, we want it to be clear, they will face a stronger, more capable and more determined Sri Lankan military," Lunstead said. "We want the cost of a return to war to be high."
"Through our military training and assistance programmes, including efforts to help with counter-terrorism initiatives and block illegal financial transactions, we are helping to shape the ability of the Sri Lankan government to protect its people and defend its interest," he said. The US had listed the LTTE as a foreign terrorist organisation in October 1997. (Agencies) "
