US warns of terror attacks in India

US warns of terror attacks in India - NDTV.com - News on US warns of terror attacks in India: "The US Embassy has warned India of impending terror attacks in Mumbai and Delhi. The Embassy statement said that foreign terrorists, possibly including members of al-Qaida, allegedly intend to carry out a series of bomb attacks in or around New Delhi and Mumbai.

According to the warning, the attacks are planned in the days leading up to Independence Day on August 15, 2006 (i.e., a possible timeframe of August 11-16). "The likely targets include major airports, key central Indian government offices, hotels and markets," said David Kennery, Spokesperson, US Embassy.

US officials told NDTV that the warning is not a direct fallout of the terror plot that was foiled in the UK on Thursday or directly linked to August 15. They maintain the warning is on the basis of a specific threat perception at this time. However, Indian sources have said that there is no information of an al-Qaida attack, and that Pakistan based groups are a bigger threat to India. "
