Tribals, non-Tribals to get forest rights - NDTV.com - News on Tribals, non-Tribals to get forest rights

Tribals, non-Tribals to get forest rights - NDTV.com - News on Tribals, non-Tribals to get forest rights: "The Scheduled Tribes and other forest dwellers Act 2005 has once again been deferred till the next Cabinet meeting.

Though it will be tabled in the on-going session of Parliament, the present shape of the bill is being seen as a major victory for the Left, which had been demanding concessions. Both the Tribal Affairs Department and the Environment Ministry have been opposing the bill tooth and nail.

Under the proposed bill, both Tribals and non-Tribals will now get forest rights, including land rights. But there will be no separate bills for Tribals and non-Tribals. All forest dwellers who have settled in forest area up till December 2005 will benefit. Earlier only those were given land rights who had settled in before September 1980, and every family has to be settled in forest area for at least three generations to enjoy the benefits.

More than 14 lakh forest dwellers including Tribals are likely to benefit once the legislation is passed. Though conservationists argue that it will threaten the green cover and endanger wildlife."
