NDTV: "AIADMK has retained the Kancheepuram and Gummidipoondi constituencies in Tamil Nadu in the by-elections held on Saturday. Elaborate security arrangements had been made at the counting centres for both constituencies. The by-polls were necessitated following the death of former AIADMK minister S S Thirunavukkarasu in Kancheepuram in November 2004, and the murder of another former AIADMK minister K Sundarsanam in January.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK's win in the by-elections to is a forerunner to the 2006 Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu. She said her party contested the polls on its own, while the opposition contested it under the seven-party Democratic Progressive Alliance banner."
