Admission rules: Relief for IIT aspirant

Admission rules: Relief for IIT aspirants - NDTV.com - News on Admission rules: Relief for IIT aspirants: "The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IITs today decided that students who have passed their qualifying examination in 2005 or earlier will be permitted to appear in joint entrance examination (JEE) 2006.

This has come as a big relief for IIT aspirants. With today's decision, students with less than 60 per cent marks in class XII boards can take the JEE exam next year.

Also students who have taken the JEE before can appear for it again for one last time in 2006.

"We have decided to make a one-time exemption for JEE 2006 only when candidates, who have passed their qualifying examination in 2005 or earlier, will be permitted to appear in JEE 2006, as a last chance irrespective of the marks secured or the number of earlier attempts," said M S Ananth, JAB spokesperson and Director of IIT-Chennai.

The board after a meeting in Kolkata decided to implement its new admission rules for students from 2007. But some of the other decisions of the board like a framework for a fresh set of question papers and the decision to not allow students already studying in IITs to take the exam again to improve their ranking will be applicable from next year itself.

For thousands disappointed after a recent decision of the IIT board to limit the number of attempts and getting a minimum of 60 per cent marks in class XII boards a necessary criteria for appearing in the JEE, today's decision came as a major breather.

Soon after the decision, it was celebration time at IIT campuses and coaching centres around the country.

Students in Kota were especially elated. The smile was back on 20-year-old Lalan who will now be able to appear in the entrance exam for the third time.

"We are very happy with this decision," said an aspirant.

With today's decision, as many as 25,000 students will be able to take the IIT entrance exam again. (With PTI inputs)"
