Police foil attack on Coimbatore

Police foil attack on Coimbatore: "The Coimbatore Police in Tamil Nadu claim to have foiled a plan for a series of explosions across the textile city. Following a tip off, Coimbatore police confiscated improvised explosive devices including thirty kilogram of gun powder, detonators, batteries and a country bomb.

They've also arrested five men belonging to Manitha Needhi Pasarai, an Islamic organisation. Police say their aim was to trigger explosions in eight places across the city, including the Government Medical College and offices of senior police officers.

"They are assisting Muslims in education, medicine and collect funds for the same. They have even collected for Palestine. Their main work is to conduct courses for youth and students," said Karan Singha, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore.

The Manchester of South India was badly hit in the 1998 serial blasts that targeted L K Advani. Fifty-eight people were killed and over hundred injured and the trial is still on. This attempt has come at a time when political parties in Kerala and Islamic groups are demanding release of Madhani, a key accused in the blast case."
